Welcome to Lauregen SDT
The onset of disability can be sudden or slow. In many cases affected individuals own their own dogs as pets. It is a natural thing to wonder if their dog will be suitable as a service dog to help the disability.
Whether small or large, young or old, most dogs can be of assistance to a lesser or greater degree. Despite this, service dog training facilities typically refuse to work with dogs owned by individuals. Not only do they insist on training their own pre-chosen dogs, but they select only easy-to-train breeds (as determined by them). They ignore the individual needs of the person who will be using the dog for assistance.
In addition to this, many facilities use their own programs to train that may in no way, or minimally, provide dogs with the skills that will assist the person needing assistance. Private trainers are typically unfamiliar with disabilities or the skills needed by the dog to address them. They may use methods that cause a dog to be distrustful of people.
The final insult is that established programs may refuse to provide their trained dog to an individual they determine to be too disabled or because the person already owns a dog!
We help you to gain independence by:
- Assessing the suitability of your dog for a service work.
- Assessing the skills your dog can learn that will assist you.
- Teaching your dog to assist you on a daily basis.
- Teaching you how to help your dog to learn additional necessary skills.
